First unique ID number to be issued within a year: Nilekani

Unique Identity Authority of India chairman Nandan Nilekani Friday said it would take about a year to issue the first unique identity (UID) number in the country.

"According to the present status of the project, the first UID issuance will take 12 to 18 months from the date of sanction of the project in August (2009). It is likely to cover about 600 million people within five years," Nilekani told reporters here.

Himalya net profit rises to Rs.8.78 crore

Himachal Pradesh-based food processing company Himalya International Friday said its net profit for the quarter ended Sep 30 rose to Rs.8.78 crore from Rs.6.47 crore in the like period last year.

The company's sales grew by 39 percent to Rs.34.06 crore in the quarter under review from Rs.26.32 crore a year earlier, Himalya chairman Manmohan Malik said in a statement.

JK Tyre doubles production capacity at Mysore

Tyre major JK Tyre commissioned its new truck and bus radial tyre plant in Mysore Friday, and said it had doubled its annual production capacity to 800,000 units on an outlay of Rs.315 crore.

"The company is fast expanding its capacity across its manufacturing facilities. We are planning to invest Rs.1,200 crore in the next three to four years to fulfil the growth demand," said JK chairman H.S. Singhania.

No prepaid mobiles in Kashmir from Nov 1

No new prepaid mobile connections would be issued nor would existing ones be renewed from Nov 1 in Jammu and Kashmir following reports that militant groups were getting SIM cards on fake identities, the union home ministry said Friday.

"The ministry of home affairs has decided that no prepaid mobile connections would be issued and existing prepaid SIM cards would not be renewed in Jammu and Kashmir after Nov 1, 2009," an official said.

Britannia Industries enters milk-based drinks segment

In order to expand its Rs.200-crore dairy products portfolio, the Bangalore-headquartered Britannia Industries launched a milk-based vitamin fortified drink targeting mainly children here Friday.

"This is not a flavoured milk but a vitamin fortified milk-based drink," Britannia managing director Vinita Bali told reporters at the launch.

Airtel launches one second pulse plan

Telecom service provider Bharti Airtel Friday launched a per second billing plan.

As per the new plan, the customers will be charged one paisa per second for all local and national long-distance calls within Bharti's network and 1.20 paise per second for calls to other networks, the company said in a statement.

Remittances to Mexico fall 13 percent

Mexican emigrants sent home $16.4 billion during the first nine months of this year, down 13.4 percent from the same period in 2008, the country's central bank said.

Last month's remittances, $1.74 billion, were 17.5 percent lower than the total for September 2008, Banco de Mexico said Thursday.

Samsung Electronics triples its profit

Samsung Electronics Co's profit more than tripled in the third quarter to hit a record 3.72 trillion won ($3.14 billion), the company said Friday.

Rising prices for memory chips and robust demand for televisions and mobile phones helped the South Korean company achieve its best quarterly net income ever.

Indian Oil posts Rs.284.4 crore profit in second quarter

State-run Indian Oil Corp Friday said it posted a net profit of Rs.284.4 crore for the second quarter, as against a net loss of Rs.7,047.1 crore for the quarter ended Sep 30, 2008.

Total income for the quarter under review stood at Rs.61,817.8 crore, compared to Rs.86,987.4 crore for the quarter ended Sep 30, 2008.

Tata Power net down 28 percent

Tata Power Friday reported a 28 percent fall in net profit at Rs.182.1 crore for the second quarter this fiscal as compared to Rs.252.9 crore it logged in the like period last year.

The company's net sales went down 12 percent to Rs.1,721.1 crore during the quarter under review from Rs.1,958.9 crore in the quarter ended Sep 30, 2008.

ICICI Bank's second quarter net up 2.6 percent

The country's largest private lender ICICI Bank Friday said its net profit increased a marginal 2.6 percent for the quarter ended Sep 30 to Rs.1,040 crore ($216 million) compared to the like quarter last fiscal.

However, it was up 18 percent over that registered in the first three months this fiscal.

Total income decreased to Rs.8,481 crore for the quarter under review from Rs.9,712 crore in the like quarter of 2008-09.

Bharti scrip nosedives 6 percent after poor results

Telecom major Bharti Airtel's scrip Friday fell 6.38 percent lower than its previous close at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) as investors dumped the stock because of disappointing second quarter results.

The scrip, which had fallen to an intra-day low of Rs.290.30 from Thursday's closing figure of Rs.312.05, ended the day at Rs.292.15.

Ansal Properties net up 35 percent

Realty major Ansal Properties and Infrastructure has posted 35 percent rise in its consolidated net profit for the quarter ended Sep 30 at Rs.31.6 crore as against Rs.23.43 crore reported in the like period last year.

Total sales of the company grew 15 percent to Rs.186.34 crore in the quarter under review from Rs.159.34 crore in the year-ago period.

National Aluminium net dips 64 percent

State-run National Aluminium Co (NALCO) Friday said its net profit dipped 64.11 percent to Rs.159.49 crore for the quarter ended Sep 30 as compared to Rs.444.46 crore in the like quarter last fiscal.

The total income of the company also fell to Rs.1,319.27 crore for the quarter under review from Rs.1,654.5 crore a year earlier.

Steel Authority profit down 17 percent

State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) Friday reported a 17 percent drop in second-quarter profit on account of lower prices.

Its net profit declined to Rs.1,660 crore in the quarter ended Sep 30 from Rs.2,009 crore in the like quarter last year, the company said in a regulatory statement.

Aditya Birla Nuvo net dips by over 9 percent

Diversified company Aditya Birla Nuvo Friday said its net profit for the quarter ending Sep 30 fell 9.29 percent to Rs.59.2 crore compared to Rs.65.31 crore in the like quarter last fiscal.

The company's total income stood at Rs.1,249.18 crore in the second quarter, down 7.48 percent from Rs.1,350.26 crore in the corresponding period last year, Aditya Birla Nuvo said in a regulatory statement.

Berger Paints net up by 21 percent

Paints major Berger's net profit went up 20.7 percent to Rs.35 crore during the second quarter this fiscal, as against Rs.29 crore that it posted a year ago, the company said Friday.

"This was on account of improved sales realisation and lower raw material coats," Berger said in a regulatory statement.

Visa Steel net drops to Rs.8.71 crore

Visa Steel, part of the Rs.5,000 crore Visa Group, Friday said its profit after tax for the quarter ended Sep 30 dropped to Rs.8.71 crore from Rs.20.1 crore in the corresponding period last year.

However, the company's revenues had been stable in the quarter under review due to better production volumes in its operating plants, Visa Steel Managing Director Vishal Agarwal said.

Reliance Capital revenues up to Rs.681 crore

Financial services company Reliance Capital, part of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, Friday said its revenues for the quarter ended Sep 30 grew 1.47 percent to Rs.681 crore from Rs.671 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal.

The company's net profit for the quarter, however, fell 44 percent to Rs.109 crore from Rs.195 crore in the like quarter in the previous fiscal.

Syndicate Bank net down 32 percent in second quarter

State-run Syndicate Bank posted a net profit of Rs.178 crore for the second quarter this fiscal, a 32 percent decline compared to the Rs.262 crore earned in the corresponding period last fiscal.

In a regulatory filing Friday, the Manipal-based bank said its total income, including interest on advances and discount on bills, however, increased to Rs.2,821 crore during the quarter under review from Rs.2,527 crore, posting a 12 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth.

Ashok Leyland half-yearly net falls 18 percent

Commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland Friday said its profits in the first half this fiscal fell 18 percent to Rs.96 crore, as compared to Rs.117 crore earned in the corresponding period last fiscal.

In the period under review, the company posted sales of Rs.2,490 crore, a fall of 34 percent from the Rs.3,758 crore it made in the first six months of the last financial year.

India 3G auctions: New Date Line Announced

India will launch electronic auctions to allot radio bandwidth for third-generation, or 3G, telecommunications services on Jan. 14.

The government will hold a separate bandwidth auction for broadband wireless access, a document on the Department of Telecommunications, or DoT, Web site said Saturday.

Foreign firms allowed to bid for India 3G auctions

The government today said foreign firms would be allowed to bid for spectrum for third generation mobile services and will start auctioning the radio waves from January 14, 2010.

"Interested foreign entities are allowed to participate in the auctions directly and apply for licences subsequently," the revised Information Memorandum, giving details about eligibility criteria and time schedule said.

India 3G auctions start in January

India said Saturday a long-delayed auction of radio bandwidth for third generation (3G) telecommunications services will start in January and will be open to foreign companies.

The auction will start January 14, 2010 with bids to be submitted by December 21, the Department of Telecommunications said in an announcement posted on its website, adding that the time schedule could be revised.

BSNL launches one paisa scheme

On the lines of private telecommunication companies, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has implemented a one paisa per second call scheme for prepaid cellular phone customers in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, BSNL sources said.

The scheme, implemented at midnight last night, would entail a fee of Rs 1.50 per day. The rate would be applicable on all calls on BSNL and other networks while the rate for STD would be two paise per second.

Tata DOCOMO launches postpaid services in Kolkata

Tata DOCOMO, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL), today announced the launch of its postpaid services here.

Informing this, a TTSL communique said the service would have a per-second pulse on STD calls, while there would be per second and a per two-second pulse in case of local calls.

''Postpaid connections will allow subscribers to customise plans with any of the free toppings available on local and STD calls as well as SMS, depending on individual usage pattern,'' the communique added.

There are three postpaid plans which come at monthly rentals under 'Start 299', 'Premium 499' and 'Platinum 799'.

HP Fully Backing Windows 7 release

General Motors launches new sedan 'Cruze'


General Motors (GM) Wednesday launched a new sedan "Cruze" in the Indian market and said its yet unnamed small car will hit the roads in December.

"About 72 percent of the Indian car market consists of small cars and a presence is needed in that segment to be a volume player," P. Balendran, vice-president of GM India, told reporters after launching the car here.

Mahindra Satyam bags $8-mn deals in Middle East, Africa

Mahindra Satyam bagged contracts valued at $8.17 million (30 million UAE dirhams) in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region in the banking, financial services and insurance sector, the global consulting IT services firm said Wednesday.

"Our new corporate identity has helped us to secure these sizeable deals in these growth markets. We are strengthening our resources to meet the demand from government, banking, telecom and real estate sectors in the MENA region," the company said in a statement here.

Mobile handset sales up 6.7 percent in India

Mobile handset sales in India recorded a 6.7 percent increase to 100.9 million in the year ended June 30, as compared to 94.6 million the year before, according to an IT market intelligence firm.

In terms of units shipped, Nokia sold the most with a market share of 56.8 percent, followed by Samsung with a 7.7 percent share and LG with 5.4 percent share in the 12-month period ended June 30, said a report by IDC's India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker.

Brazil's O Globo becomes Latin America's first daily on Kindle


Brazil's O Globo newspaper became the first in South America to publish an edition that can be downloaded and read on the Kindle, a software developed by Amazon.com for reading e-books and other digital media.

The launch this week was timed to coincide with the release of the global version of the electronic reading device created by Amazon, now available in about 100 countries.

Tata Motors to launch Rs 5.5 -lakh 'Tata Manza'

Tata Motors Ltd, the maker of the world's cheapest car, `the Nano,' is all set to launch the cheapest luxury car - the Tata Manza. A re-designed version of the company's Indica Vista, it will be launched on 14 October, just ahead of the Diwali buying season.

Despite its high-profile launch, the unrealistically priced Nano is hardly visible on the road - although the company has garnered a good amount of money from advance bookings for its 'magic car'.

"The company (Docomo) is interested in developing certain amount of value-added services which will be available on the Tata-Docomo GSM network here," Tata Teleservices managing director Anil Sardana told reporters at the launch of Tata-Docomo GSM services here.

Larsen and Toubro raises $600 mn

Construction and engineering major Larsen and Toubro Thursday said it has raised $600 million through qualified institutional placements (QIP) and issue of foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs).

The company raised $400 million through the QIP route, while $200 million came thorough FCCBs.

Financial institutions subscribed to the $400 million QIP at a 1 percent discount to the scrip's Wednesday closing figure of Rs.1,677.40, the company said.

Vikram Pandit and his Citi get good marks

An outside review of Citigroup Inc.'s management team has concluded that it is generally in good shape and awarded strong overall marks in particular to the banking giant's Indian American CEO Vikram Pandit, according to a media report.

The review, conducted this summer for Citigroup's board by recruiting and consulting firm Egon Zehnder International, however suggested that some shuffling of senior executives might be needed, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday citing people familiar with the matter.

Reliance Industries proposes 1:1 bonus

The board of Reliance Industries, India's largest private company, Wednesday recommended a dividend of Rs.13 per share and a bonus issue of one new share for each existing one.

The announcement came after the closing bell for Indian equities markets, where the company's scrip, with a paid up value of Rs.10, had ended at Rs.2,099 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), down 1.57 percent or Rs.33.45 over the previous close.

The bonus issue and the dividend are subject to approvals by the shareholders.

Motorola launches seven mobile models in India

Leading mobile manufacturer Motorola has launched seven new handset models, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

The seven stylish handsets come with a range of features that provide an option affordable to everyone, said Faisal Siddiqui, country head (mobile devices) of Motorola India, in the statement.

While MOTO ZN300 is a sleek slider with 3.1 megapixel camera, the six MOTOYUVA WX Generation mobile phones include the stylish MOTOYUVA WX160 and MOTOYUVA WX180 candybar handsets with FM radio.

La Opala aims for Rs.125 crore turnover by 2011-12

Crockery brand La Opala is gearing up to become a Rs.125 crore turnover company by 2011-12, a top company official said here Wednesday.

"We will have a turnover of around Rs.100 crore this year, up from Rs.64 crore in 2008-09," Sushil Jhunjhunwala, managing director of La Opala RG Ltd, told reporters at a press meet to unveil its new Diva collection endorsed by Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu.

The new manufacturing unit of the company in Uttarakhand would help in achieving this turnover.

"Our state-of-the-art plant at Eldeco Sidcul Industrial Park in Uttarkhand was commissioned in end-2007 and this will help us to grow our sales significantly this year," Jhunjhunwala said.

The company has invested Rs.37 crore for setting up the plant, which has increased the company's capacity by 40 percent, he said, adding that it currently makes 150,000 pieces of tableware a day, of which 30 percent is exported.

Bipasha Basu will remain the company's brand ambassador for the coming one-and-a-half years.

Of the Rs.500 crore crockery market, the company has 25 percent market share, which it plans to take it up to 40 percent in the coming three years, Jhunjhunwala said.

The company is expected to grow at 40 percent in 2009-10, he said.

Mercedes-Benz optimistic about Indian market

Luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz is hopeful of achieving good sales growth in India in the coming months despite stiff competition from rivals like BMW and Audi.

"Last year we led India's luxury car segment with a 46 percent market share. This year Mercedes is somewhat behind BMW, but we are hopeful of gaining momentum in the coming days," Wilfried Aulbur, managing director and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz India, told reporters here Saturday.

Grameenphone launches Bangladesh's largest IPO

Bangladesh's telecom major Grameenphone Sunday launched the country's largest initial public offering (IPO), hoping to raise Taka 4.8 billion ($80 million approximately) from the domestic market.

The largest of its kind in Bangladesh's capital market history, it offers 69,439,400 ordinary shares of Tk 10 each, in addition to a Tk 60 premium per share, Star Online said.

Cyber crime generates more money than drug trafficking

With more and more people going online and social networking becoming pervasive, cyber crime now generates more money than drug trafficking, says global cyber security solutions provider Symantec.


"Cyber crime has surpassed drug trafficking as a criminal money-maker. Every three seconds, an identity is stolen worldwide," Symantec consumer business unit vice-president for Asia-Pacific David Freer told IANS.

Cyber crime is perpetrated by hackers through a spate of attacks in the form of malware, spam, virus and bots when computers are connected to the Internet.

Now, flight check-in at Dhaula Kuan Metro station

In a bid to boost the convenience for its commuters, the Delhi Metro Sunday announced that airline passengers will be able to check in for their flights at the Dhaula Kuan station on the Airport Express line. This will be the third City Airport Terminal (CAT) along this route.

Passengers taking the high speed Airport Express will, thus, be able to get their boarding passes for their flights at the NH-8, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Dwarka sector 21 and now the Dhaula Kuan Metro station.

The area is littered with sand hills, granite, marble heaps, construction cranes and complex building-machinery. Another group of daily wage earners waits outside for day jobs in any of the 34 apartment blocks under construction by Emaar-MGF. A new road linking the complex to the south is also under construction, along with a practice arena for athletes next to the complex.
