The rise and rise of Indian investment in Britain

A
s India's Tata group appears poised to swoop on British icons Jaguar and Land Rover, 2007 will be remembered as not only one marking 60 years of India's independence from Britain but also as a year that saw the rise and rise of Indian investment in Britain.

In fact, from the rather patronising position of being a 'jewel in the crown' during the heydays of the British Empire, India has emerged as one of Britain's foremost partners in a relationship spanning 60 years, which can best be described as 'onwards and upwards'.

In recent decades, the contours of the India-Britain encounter were uneven. Earlier, the story had more to do with Indians arriving in Britain to take up jobs that locals did not want to do. But in the last few years, India's image first changed from a taker of British jobs due to outsourcing to a generator of jobs in Britain.

Throughout 2007, Indian enterprise has stalked British businesses and has taken over several companies: Tata taking over steel giant Corus, Vijay Mallya's United Breweries taking over scotch major Whyte & Mackay, and a host of small and big companies being taken over by Indian companies seeking to spread their reach globally.

It was Mahatma Gandhi who set the tone for the relationship between India and Britain in Oxford in 1931. He was asked at a meeting of members of the Raleigh Club and the Indian Majlis: "How far would you cut India off from the Empire?"

Gandhi replied: "From the Empire, completely; from the British nation, not at all, if I want India to gain and not to grieve. The British Empire is an Empire only because of India. The Emperorship must go and I should love to be an equal partner with Britain, sharing her joys and sorrows. But it must be a partnership on equal terms."

As India celebrated 60 years of its independence Aug 15, the umbilical connections with Britain rooted in the colonial experience made for a special relationship that withstood the test of time since 1947 when the Union Jack gave way to the Tricolour.

India's independence was preceded by centuries of British rule, during which ideas of modernity were transplanted on to a traditional civilisation. The ideas in turn galvanised local resistance to foreign rule and, after years of tumultuous events, culminated in the idea of India and eventually in self-rule and freedom.

If the story of British rule was replete with bad news, it was also marked by a sense of fair play, and the introduction of the English language, cricket and institutions that have benefited independent India in many ways.

As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said while accepting an honorary degree from Oxford University in July 2005: "Today, with the balance and perspective offered by the passage of time and the benefit of hindsight, it is possible for an Indian prime minister to assert that India's experience with Britain had its beneficial consequences too."

Much of Indian public life has been structured around British laws, ideas and values. This includes the field of education, industry, health and the media. British newspapers such as The Times, London, were seen as benchmarks to which Indian journalists and newspapers aspired to. The state-owned All India Radio was patterned along the lines of the BBC.

Britain contributed at various levels as India faced several challenges after independence. But by the late 1980s, India and Britain began regarding each other as genuine partners, free from the hangover of the colonial experience.

As Manmohan Singh said: "Today, there is no doubt in my mind that Britain and India are indeed partners and have much in common in their approach to a wide range of global issues. As we look back and also look ahead, it is clear that the Indo-British relationship is one of 'give and take'."

In 2007, relations between India and Britain have been universally described as the 'best ever'. The relationship is increasingly marked by the resonating tenor of currency - as Indian companies take over British businesses and create jobs in Britain, and British companies outsource low and high-end work to India to exploit Indians' strengths in intellectual property and low-cost economy.

India has now emerged as a top investor in Britain. Regional development agencies are vying with one another to court Indian business and Bollywood producers to come and invest or shoot in their regions. India's perception as the taker of British jobs through offshoring has changed to creator of jobs in Britain.

Former prime minister Tony Blair was the first G-8 leader to moot the idea of India joining G-8 discussions. At his invitation, Manmohan Singh visited Britain in July 2005 for the "G-8 Plus 5" Gleneagles Summit (India, China, South Africa, Brazil and Mexico). India has since been a key participant in the deliberations.

Britain strongly supports India's candidature for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. As the March 2006 White Paper outlining the forward plan for British diplomacy put it: "India is an important partner on global economic and political issues including energy and climate change, serious regional crises, and global non-proliferation.

"As the world's largest democracy, India will have a growing influence in international affairs and on the global economy. It will have particular strengths in the service and knowledge sectors, while broadening the base of its growth. We are strong advocates of India gaining a permanent seat on the UN Security Council."

Relations between India and Britain is also marked by the presence of over one million people of Indian origin in Britain, where their growing economic prosperity has come to be encompassed in the term, 'the strength of the brown pound'.

Reliance Communications acquires US data services firm

R
eliance Communications Thursday said it has acquired the US-based data communications services company Yipes for $300 million to amplify its presence in the $100-billion global market for this industry.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the regulator for the industry in the US, has given its nod to the acquisition by Flag Telecom, which is a part of the Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, the company said in a statement.

"FCC approval is an important step for Reliance Communications to accelerate its plans to expand Yipes' coverage in US domestic market," said Punit Garg, chief executive of Flag and president of Reliance Communications.

"This step also paves the way to extend Yipes' services worldwide over Flag's global next-generation network, creating significantly more value from our undersea network in the strongholds of India, the Middle East and East Asia."

According to Flag, the global enterprise and institutional data services market is estimated at $100 billion, while the Ethernet services market is projected to become a $30.7-billion market by 2012.

Reliance Communications also plans to invest in the global expansion of Yipes' services and take its network coverage beyond the 14 key metropolitan markets in the US to offer combined solutions with expertise of both companies.

"Yipes' customers will enjoy broader coverage, access to more international markets and more rollout over new innovative services," the company said.

The London Business School Kicks of its Annual India Trip

Conference on "Exploring Business Opportunities in Rural India"
A
topic often discussed in India is the rural-urban divide and how the two economies of the country are increasingly growing apart. The popular belief remains that urban India is growing at the cost of rural India. The reality is that over the past two decades rural India has grown significantly faster than urban India - the rural economy is estimated to have grown on an average of 7.3% as compared to a 5.4% in the urban economy. India's more than 700 million villagers now account for the majority of consumer spending in the country. A new prosperity is being witnessed.

Speakers at the conference include: Ajay Piramal (Chairman Nicholas Piramal) Nachiket Mor (President, ICICI Foundation), JJ Irani (Director Tata Sons, Dr. Viral Acharya,( Professor, London Business School), Priya Basu (The World Bank), Sanjeev Asthana (CEO, Reliance Retail Agri Business) Sanjay Kapoor (President Bharti Airtel Mobility) Vijay Mahajan (CEO ,BASIX) Naveen Jindal (MD Jindal Steel, Member of Parliament) Abhijit Banerjee (Professor, MIT) Amit Mehra (MD, Reuters Market Light) Madhu Yashki (Member of Parliament), Dr. Gita Piramal (Managing Editor, The Smart Manager) Richard Stagg (CMG, British High Commissioner to India)

The conference approaches the theme in 3 ways through its interactive panel discussions-

-- Rural Markets and Entrepreneurship: This panel seeks to explore the issues faced by entrepreneurs in setting up and starting a business focused on the rural Indian market. It tackles issues such as raising capital, drafting a workable business plan and incubating the business. Speakers on this panel are Venture Capitalists and Entrepreneurs who evaluate and execute these investment opportunities.

-- Financial Products for the Rural Consumer; Despite having an elaborate network of public banks vast majorities of India's poor are excluded from the formal financial sector. This panel explores the challenges and opportunities in addressing financial services needs of the rural consumer. In particular it explores the size and the viability of the Microfinance market, the risk profile of the rural borrower from a theoretical perspective, a policy view of institutions operating in the market and a comparison of returns versus the urban market. The panels constitute speakers from local government, the World Bank, and heads of large Indian banks.

-- Supply Chain and Logistics: As the Indian retail and manufacturing sectors open up, there are new challenges in logistics and supply chains in rural areas, particularly to source farm produce and delivery of goods and services. This panel deals with the challenge of connecting rural production centres to urban markets with a specific focus on infrastructure and information challenges. Speakers on the panel include Presidents and CEO's of FMCG and telecommunication companies, entrepreneurs, MP's and academics.

Each Panel has been conceptualized to provide three distinct views on the sub-theme. The first is a practitioners view (representing this view is a successful entrepreneur or CEO/president of a large FMCG/Bank/VC fund). The second is an Academic/theoretical view provided by a professor of the London Business School or MIT. Finally each panel has a member of parliament or a representative from the World Bank to provide a government or policy view on the issue. Panels will be moderated by - Suhel Seth managing partner of Counselage, Vivian Fernandes of CNBC, and Phil Smith of Reuters.

Globalization, volatile capital markets, ever-increasing shareholder expectations, and - in the wake of the Enron and WorldCom debacles- growing demands for greater corporate accountability and improved governance procedures are remaking today's businesses. But while the CEO remains a key player in the corporate equation, another player is now beginning to assume unprecedented importance-The CFO.

Today's CFO has evolved into being corporate strategist and business leaders responsible for directing strategic implementations thus playing a major key role in planning investment and how it will affect the bottom line. Besides keeping all the financial data up to the mark they have to meet the investor as well the board of director's expectations.

This Conference will provide you the best opportunity to come together and learn about the key challenging roles subject to CFOs involvement in an organization.

Increasing Acceptance of Alternate Fuel Vehicles Aiding the Growth of the Indian Alternate Fuel Vehicles (LPG & CNG) Kit Market

S
purred on by the growing acceptance of alternate fuel vehicles, the Indian alternate fuel vehicles kit market has seen a definite upswing in the last two years. Alternate fuel vehicles are overcoming the initial hindrances of low availability of fuel and are beginning to be widely accepted. The ability to convince and convert customers will offer vehicle manufacturers and kit manufacturers lucrative market opportunities.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan(http://www.automotive&transportation.frost.com), Alternate Fuel Vehicles (LPG & CNG) Kit Market in India, finds that market earned revenues of over $82.7 million in 2006 and estimates this to reach $473.4 million in 2012.

If you are interested in a virtual brochure, which provides manufacturers, end users, and other industry participants with an overview of the Alternate Fuel Vehicles (LPG & CNG) Kit Market in India, then send an e-mail to Ravinder Kaur/Nimisha Iyer, Corporate Communications, at ravinder.kaur@frost.com/niyer@frost.com with your full name, company name, title, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Upon receipt of the above information, an overview will be sent to you by e-mail. Interviews with the press are also available.

"The market for alternate fuel vehicles in India is expected to grow at a significantly faster pace than the regular vehicles," notes Frost & Sullivan Program Manager Jose Paul. "Stringent emission norms, specific Government directives on use of alternate fuel vehicles and increasing availability of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquid petroleum gas (LPG) will all drive the market rapidly."

Most key vehicle manufacturers are looking at launching alternate fuel vehicles in India over the next two to three years, and this has increased the acceptance levels of alternate fuel vehicles among end users. Furthermore, with petrol prices continuing to increase, many owners of existing petrol vehicles are also looking at converting their vehicles to run on alternate fuels.

However, the lack of widespread availability of alternate fuels in India is a barrier to the growth of alternate fuel vehicles. While the availability of CNG is currently limited to select centers in the west and north, the penetration of LPG dispensing stations has been concentrated on specific cities, with their network on highways remaining almost negligible.

"The expected ramp up of refueling networks is expected to take time with the CNG pipeline project slated to be operational only by 2008-09," says Paul. "Moreover, the set of mother and daughter stations is likely to take an additional two to three years; similarly, it would take about five to six years to build up the number of LPG refueling stations across the country."

In order to increase their market presence, alternate fuel vehicle conversion kit manufacturers will need to focus on existing centers, where CNG and LPG are available. They will further need to aggressively market their products and also tie-up with vehicle manufacturers at the original equipment (OE) level and vehicle dealership levels.

Alternate Fuel Vehicles (LPG & CNG) Kit Market in India is part of the Automotive & Transportation Growth Partnership Service program, which also includes research in the following markets: Indian automotive and auto components market covering passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and two wheeler markets. Components include fuel injection systems, forged components, tires, batteries, sensors, telematics and vehicle tracking systems market. Other research includes analysis of new technologies, export markets and research on the Middle East automotive and components market. All research services included in subscriptions provide detailed market opportunities and industry trends that have been evaluated following extensive interviews with market participants.

New magical blue circle on your map: My position on Google Maps

W
e've all been there: You're out and about, and you need to figure out where you are, what's around you, and how to get there. Google Maps for mobile can help you do all that, but first you have to enter in a starting point using the keypad. And let's face it -- entering things into your phone using the keypad is so 2006. While some people are lucky enough to have GPS-enabled mobile phones that provide location information for Google Maps for mobile, the vast majority of us are not. So what to do?

Starting today, we have an answer: Google Maps for mobile with My Location . My Location is a new beta technology from Google that uses cell tower identification to provide you with approximate location information, so it will work on phones without GPS. Simply fire up Google Maps for mobile, press [0], and the map will indicate your approximate location by centering on a blue circle like this:

If you do have a GPS-enabled device, My Location can actually complement it. My Location kicks in faster than GPS in most cases, so you can access your location even faster on the map. It also works reliably indoors (unlike GPS) and doesn't drain your phone battery at the rate that GPS does.

Of course, this feature is in beta, which in this case means a few different things: First, although accuracy and coverage may vary, both will improve over time as more and more people use Google Maps for mobile. Second, My Location isn't currently supported on all devices (see our Help Center for more on this); we're working on that. Third, we'd love to get your feedback on it -- feel free to leave your comments below.

To give Google Maps for mobile with My Location a try, text "MYLOCATION" to 33669, or head to www.google.com/gmm on your mobile browser.

Google on the iPhone: Fast and Fluid

W
e all know that using the web on mobile phones can be a challenge sometimes. Compared to our personal computers, the screens are smaller, it's more difficult to navigate and enter text, the network connections are slower, and the browsers lack many of the features we've become accustomed to. I deal with this every day as both a developer and a user of mobile web applications. So you can imagine how excited I was when the iPhone launched with a large touch screen, Wi-Fi, and a full-blown Safari web browser!

I started thinking about how to use AJAX technology to improve Google on the iPhone. I set out to create an application that would preload my favorite Google products and allow me to switch between them instantly. I wanted web results as well as image, local, and news results without having to repeat my search. I wanted to check Gmail and my news feeds in Google Reader without having to load a new page every time. I also wanted Google Suggest to save me time typing queries on the virtual keyboard.

I created a prototype and showed it to some fellow Googlers. After that, things started moving pretty quickly. A few weeks (and a few gallons of mint tea) later, I had an improved version which Googlers throughout the company were using on their iPhones (it works great on the iPod Touch too). Now we want to share it with everyone.

Our guiding principles were "fast" and "fluid." We think we've achieved both, thanks to some AJAX magic made possible by the iPhone's Safari browser. To try it out, just go to www.google.com on your iPhone.

We want to know what you think! You can post your comments below or submit specific questions on our discussion board. We hope you'll like it.

Alphion Corporation Announces PON Extension System

Alphion Expands Access Product Line Up to Include PON.ext(TM) Capability
A
lphion Corporation, a privately held company that develops, manufactures and markets communication systems, sub-systems, and integrated photonic components based on its proprietary QLight(R) technology, announced today the availability of its PON.ext(TM) Passive Optical Network (PON) Extension System. The system will be on display in Hall 14, Booth 14 at the India Telecom 2007 Exhibition held at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India on 12-15 December. The transparent, all-optical system is compatible with GPON, GE-PON, and BPON protocols as well as with third-party PON terminal equipment.

Alphion has already delivered PON.ext(TM) beta systems which are presently undergoing testing at carrier labs world-wide. General availability is expected in the first half of 2008.

The PON.ext(TM) PON extension system offers all-optical gain up to 20 dB, and is fully compatible with both the 1490 nm downstream and 1310 nm burst-mode upstream optical signals used in GPON, GE-PON and B-PON networks. The system includes PON.ext(TM) line cards that are fully compatible with the company's AOLT-4000 chassis. The AOLT-4000 chassis provides a carrier-class platform with redundant powering, control and management for up to ten PON.ext(TM) line cards.

"Our PON.ext(TM) technology addresses existing limitations in PON link budgets, allowing carriers to extend network reach, increase split ratios, or both," commented Dr. Bharat P. Dave, Alphion Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "Alphion is actively working with both FSAN and ITU-T on creating a standard for GPON reach extension technology."

This announcement follows Alphion's live demonstration of PON.ext(TM) technology at NXTcomm in June of 2007. As part of the ITU-T GPON Pavilion where Alphion and other vendors demonstrated the interoperability of their GPON equipment, the PON.ext(TM) extension system enabled the delivery of triple-play services (voice, video and data) to 128 customers over a 60 km PON from a single OLT port.

The PON.ext(TM) system is a part of Alphion's growing line of broadband access products, which includes an end-to-end GPON solution. The Alphion AOLT-4000 Optical Line Terminal and AONT-100/200/300 Optical Network Terminal family are in full compliance with the International Telecommunications Union's standard for GPON equipment (ITU-T G.984). This ensures that the Alphion product family meets the stringent carrier-class requirements and interoperates with a broad spectrum of other manufacturers' GPON equipment.
