Manipal Cure and Care (MCC), India's first health & wellness retail chain, today announced the launch of Wellness Mpower card in Ahmedabad.
Somnath Das, Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Cure and Care said, "Wellness Mpower card is yet another pioneering initiative by MCC. Loyalty points are given based on sales by cards in other categories, but for the first time in India, we are rewarding people to stay healthy by offering bonus points. Free check of BP, blood sugar, Body mass Index and Bone density will be given four times a year. If a guest is found to be within healthy limits he will be given bonus points in addition to loyalty points accrued on spends at MCC centres. We believe that the Wellness Mpower card will help trigger a wellness revolution through rewarding preventive monitoring of likely health issues."
Guests also benefit by free consultations, savings on healthcare services, health & beauty products and pharmaceutical products. Wellness Mpower card benefits include 24 free consultations (with GP, dentist, dermatologist, clinical psychologist, gynaecologist or paediatrician, ophthalmologist and a 50 per cent saving on consultations with a plastic surgeon, orthopedician, cardiologist or endocrinologist).
In addition, the Wellness Mpower card also offers 20 per cent saving on diagnostic services and lab investigations, 10 per cent saving on health checks and MCC products and two loyalty points for every Rs 100 spent in an MCC outlet.
"MCC recognises that customers today are highly mobile and would like to enjoy the same benefits across the country. Wellness Mpower card is also the first national loyalty card in the segment and will be applicable across the country in various MCC centres", Mr Das added.
Dr Satish Amarnath, Medical Director, Manipal Care and Cure, said, "In order to offer personalised services like appointment preference, we plan to limit the number of Mpower cards initially. We will issue MCC cards currently in Ahmedabad on a first come first served basis for 90 days only, or till the membership exceeds 20000 cards, whichever is earlier. We will expand the base of Mpower cards as we increase our presence in Ahmedabad and other cities."
Wellness Mpower cards will carry an annual fees of Rs 499 for the first card for the main family member and Rs 249 for add-on cards for other family members. Each family member will be able to access shortly, his medical records through MCC electronic medical records system [EMR] across India. This system provides complete healthcare information for self-monitoring to the guest through the Internet. This provides a unique opportunity to monitor the wellness status of the individual. MCC is also appointing authorized agents for sales of this card.
Earlier in the month, MCC won the prestigious Golden Peacock Award for Innovative Product / Service Award - 2007. For the first time, the Golden Peacock Innovative Product/ Service has been bestowed to a health and wellness retail brand, that too within five months of its launch.
As the country's first health & wellness retail chain, MCC has also introduced many new things for the first time in India. These include A-M-P-L-E Card (Allergies, Medical History, Past History, List of Medication, Emergency Number), EMR (Electronic Medical Record), Integration of CIMS (Cumulative Index of Medical Specialties - pharmaceutical drug interaction alert), Customer Charter, error proofing methodology and single episode of care in less than 45 min to name a few.

Manipal AcuNova Limited Central Reference Laboratory Receives Accreditation from College of American Pathologists
Manipal AcuNova Limited Central Reference Laboratory, Bangalore, India, has been awarded an accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation on the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on site inspection.
The Laboratory's Director was advised of this national recognition and 'congratulated for the excellence of services being provided'. Manipal AcuNova Limited Central Reference Laboratories is one of the ten Laboratories that are CAP accredited nationwide.
The CAP Laboratory Accreditation program began in the early 1960's, is recognized by the US Government as being equal to more stringent than the Government's own inspection program.
During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality control of the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff's qualifications, the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program, records, as well as the overall management of the facility. This stringent management program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standards of care for the laboratory's patients.
The College of American Pathologists is a medical society serving nearly 16000 physician members and the laboratory community across the world. It is the world's largest association composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The CAP is an advocate for high quality and cost effective medical care.

Manipal AcuNova Acquires ECRON
Manipal AcuNova Ltd completed the acquisition of ECRON GmbH, Europe. The two leading CRO’s will now combine the clinical research expertise of ECRON’s 20 years experience, with MAL’s association with India’ largest medical University.
The Company will provide end-to-end services for Phase I – IV clinical trials including Project Management, Clinical Data Management (CDM), Biostatistics, Medical Writing, Central Lab and Bio-Availability/Bio Equivalence (BA/BE) Studies to pharma, biotech, device and diagnostic companies. The combined strength will be 265 employees slated to grow year on year. Frankfurt will be European HQ, Princeton for US and Bangalore for Asia. While Mr. D A Prasanna, Vice Chairman and MD, will continue to lead the Global operations based out of Bangalore, Dr. Wiedey MD will be President, Europe and Dr Kohkan Shamsi MD PhD will be CEO in the US.
Speaking on the development, Dr Wiedey, President, ECRON said “AcuNova is a company built on quality making it a primary reason for ECRON’s choice in this synergy. This collaboration will benefit our European and US clients. The possibility of extending trials from Europe to India will make drug development faster. Trial data can be analyzed with biostatisticians and data management professionals from India, speeding up submission to regulators like EMEA and US FDA. We can take up bigger complex projects with a broader range of services like central lab and PK/PD service”
On process standardization, he added, “Highest ICH GCP and FDA standards will be deployed across the organization hence clinical operations will use German practices and DM will use the Indian practice. We foresee harmonization of SOP’s within the next 6 months.”
On the acquisition, Mr. DA Prasanna, Vice Chairman and Founder, MAL, said “Industry experience shows bringing a drug into market takes 8-10 years. Indian CRO’s do not have a track record in seeing a drug through development and into market. Hence this merger will combine MAL’s access to investigators and patients with ECRON’s quality reputation making drugs available faster.
