Taking note of the longstanding demand of ex-servicemen on 'one rank, one pension' scheme, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today said a decision on the issue would be taken by the end of this month.
Pointing out that the welfare of ex-servicemen was a high priority sector for the government, Ms Patil in her address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament said, ''The Committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary to look into the issue of 'One Rank One Pension', has already commenced its work and expects to complete it by the end of June 2009.'' Calling the armed forces as ''the nation's pride, a symbol of our values of sacrifice, valour and the spirit of national integration'', Ms Patil said they would be ''fully enabled'' with modern equipment and all necessary devices to repel any threat from land, sea or air.
She also pointed that as the defence forces stood committed to the task of defending the territorial integrity of the country, ''a number of steps are underway'' not just ''to enhance combat efficiency'' but also to address the requirements of modern day warfare.
