Through an urgent letter addressed to the Mumbai Cyber Crime Investigation Cell, animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has demanded closure of an online community that instigates violence towards animals on the social networking site Orkut.
PETA was shocked to see the topics discussed on orkut community “I hate dogs” which discussed “How 2 kill a dog?”. Through the discussion PETA figured out that one of the members of the community suggests killing of puppies “by dropping them from a building” and also admits to throwing three puppies, another member admits that “I have killed 2 by my car after 10 – 12 hard tries near my place. 1 was a small puppy on which I dragged my bike.”
In the letter addressed to the Joint Commissioner of Police, copied to the Secretary, Department of Information and Technology, Government of India and COO, Google, PETA has urged the police to immediately direct the website to block such illegal content and to initiate appropriate action against the members who have claimed to have committed acts in violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Act) 1960.
“Instances such as these indicates a disturbing trend, People who are violent to animals rarely stop there. Studies show that people who abuse their animal companions are likely to abuse their kids” says PETA India Coordinator – Campaigns and Legal Affairs N.G. Jayasimha. “A person who comes home and kicks the dog is probably just warming up”..
Copies of the letter written by PETA India to the Joint Commissioner of Police is available upon request.
