LEX Nexus, Indian Law firm Now has Global Presence

LEX Nexus a Mumbai based law firm had been re-named as Hathi & Partners in October 2006 and has spinned-off its project works on November 16, 2007 to form a specialised project law firm under its original name LEX Nexus with two offices at Mumbai and at New Delhi with ten associate offices at major cities in India and forty offices globally at EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), America and Asia Pacific. Hathi & Partners will continue as a full serviced law firm focused on maritime, corporate and commercial, dispute resolution, banking and finance. Hathi & Partners is a Legal500 recommended law firm and Mr. Shrikant Hathi of the firm has been consistently ranked as a leading individual for shipping work in India and other partners are also known for their outstanding work .

Mr. Suhail Farooqui, Managing Partner of LEX Nexus is of the view that if Government of India is planning to open up legal services for foreign law firms in India, we surely need to gear up for our presence overseas depending on the permissibility for foreign law firms there. LEX Nexus will be operating in India and globally through its networked offices until formal India entry to foreign law firm is opened up and may enter into joint venture with foreign law firm or such other collaboration as may be permissible. Mr. Farooqui states that LEX Nexus will be specialising on projects mainly pertaining to oil, gas, energy, infrastructure, privatisation, real estate, aviation amongst other project work.

Managing Partner Mr. Shrikant Hathi of Hathi & Partners feel that foreign law firms should be allowed to practise in India only if the Indian law firms are given equal status in their countries. It should be reciprocal and not one sided. Globalisation effect might present challenges through possible entry of foreign lawyers and we should be prepared for it. According to Mr. Hathi, Indian lawyers benefit by practising in foreign countries and, on this basis, foreign lawyers should be allowed to practice in India.
