WHY
-- 14 November 2007 marks the first-ever United Nations World Diabetes
Day. Observances recognised by the UN promote awareness and mobilise
the diabetes community for action.
-- The UN Resolution calls on member states and relevant organisations to
raise public awareness on diabetes and related complications as well
as on its prevention and care.
-- With 246 million people living with diabetes globally, the
international community must act in order to curb the rising
prevalence of diabetes.
-- Practical examples that have been shown to improve diabetes care will
be highlighted, from early intervention and treatment to adopting a
patient-centered treatment approach.

The Global Partnership for Effective Diabetes Management is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, who provided support for the UN Resolution on Diabetes: "Time to Put Fine Words into Action" publication.
