The Fletcher School at Tufts University Announces Master of Laws in International Law Degree Program

The Fletcher School at Tufts University, the first graduate school of international affairs in the United States, announced the launch of a new degree program for legal professionals. A full-time, post-graduate degree program, The Master of Laws in International Law (LL.M.) is the only non-law school in the United States to offer an LL.M. program.

"The introduction of the LL.M. degree program to The Fletcher School's academic offering is testament to our commitment to address the crucial role of law in international affairs," said Stephen Bosworth, Dean of The Fletcher School. "Since its inception, The Fletcher School has taught its students to examine the broader geopolitical forces that shape international law, and the LL.M. program will now provide legal professionals with the skills to practice law with an international mindset."

Since its founding in 1933, The Fletcher School has been a leader in international legal education, employing distinguished legal scholars and practitioners on its faculty, including Leo Gross, Keith Highet, Robert Hudec, Hans Kelsen, Louis Sohn, Julius Stone, and Roscoe Pound. The current LL.M. faculty brings extensive experience in international law, both in and out of the classroom and has worked with the United Nations, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, The World Bank, and on Wall Street.

Combining a broad contextual approach to law instruction with a greater understanding of disparate societies and the international community, The Fletcher School's LL.M. degree is a one-year program consisting of four courses each semester. In addition to seven core academic courses, students will undertake a seminar or independent study project with a substantial writing requirement. While there are no required courses, students may follow one of the three optional tracks with the law curriculum:

-- Public International Law

-- International Business Law

-- International Economic Law

In addition to a rigorous and comprehensive course offering, students will frequently have the opportunity to hear world-renowned experts of international law as part of a visiting scholar speaker series. The program concludes with a symposium at the Tufts University European Center in Talloires, France.
