Houston's major professional franchise brands are not regarded as highly by local followers as fans in other cities regard their teams, a national survey has found.
Despite the team's problems on the field since a trip to the World Series in 2005, the most valued team brand in Houston, according to the survey by Turnkey Sports and Entertainment, is the Houston Astros.
Although they did not make the top 10 of the Major League Baseball rankings, the Astros did finish as the highest-placed Houston team in terms of local brand loyalty at No. 39 out of 122 teams measured in the four North American major sports leagues.
And while the Houston Rockets may have finished slightly lower on the scale at No. 47, the National Basketball Association team's is ranked at No. 7 in local brand loyalty compared to all other NBA teams. The defending league champion San Antonio Spurs were ranked No. 1 in the NBA, while the Dallas Mavericks were at No. 5.
It's not surprising that the Houston Texans, which until this season were one of the worst teams in the National Football League, ranked 78th in terms of brand loyalty -- but certainly much higher than the football team stuck at the bottom of the list, the Arizona Cardinals.
As for the No. 1 sports brand most valued by fans in a North American city, the honor goes to the black and gold of the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.
NFL teams also weighed in at No. 2 (New England Patriots) and No. 3 (Indianapolis Colts) overall, while the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League placed fourth, followed at No. 5 by the World Series champion Boston Red Sox.
The 20-question survey was conducted in May and June, and involved 12,000 fans in the 47 North American markets that have NFL, NBA, MLB and National Hockey League teams.
