Washington, DC-based AppleTree Institute for Education Innovation was selected as a featured charity in the 2007-08 Catalogue for Philanthropy.
AppleTree (www.appletreeinstitute.org) Institute was selected from a competitive field of over 250 candidates. "Charities were selected for excellence, innovation, and cost-effectiveness," said Barbara Harman, Executive Director of the Harman Family Foundation. "These are certainly among the best small charities in the Washington, DC region."
AppleTree is expanding high quality preschools in the Nation's Capital where the need is great. Nine of ten 4th graders cannot read with proficiency and seven out of ten cannot read with a basic level of comprehension as measured by the Nation's Report Card ("NAEP").
Low-income children stand to gain the most from high quality pre-school education - but they are also the least likely to receive it.
AppleTree's flexibility-partnering with community development corporations and DC public schools-has allowed the program to grow quickly.
AppleTree opened 3 public charter preschools serving 144 children with plans to grow to 500 within five years. AppleTree children achieve national norms in language and literacy by the time they enter kindergarten, and progress to date is astounding.
Sixty-eight nonprofits were chosen this year. The group includes 11 nonprofits that were first featured in the 03-04 Catalogue. Each Catalogue also relists prior years' charitable organizations, which are live at the website. The new Catalogue goes live on October 4th.
35,000 individuals and hundreds of foundations will receive copies of the Catalogue in mid-November. To date, the Catalogue has helped to raise nearly $4 million in pledges and gifts for local nonprofits.
According to Harman, "The Catalogue is a showcase for DC region philanthropy and an inviting way for individuals and families to participate in charitable giving." An online donation at its website, www.catalogueforphilanthropy-dc.org, can be allocated as the donor pleases. Donors may also contact the charities directly. "Because the Catalogue is fully paid for by its philanthropic partners," Harman notes, "100% of every donation goes to the designated nonprofits."
This is the Catalogue's fifth year in the Washington, DC region. Supported by local foundations, the Catalogue profiles environmental, cultural, educational, human services, and international organizations.
